Reformed Tunes Tuesday – Thrice “In Exile”
Posted on 19. Jan, 2010 by Les in Reformed Tunes Tuesday

Reformed Tunes Tuesday is Back With a Vengeance.
My friend, Josh Mullen, over at regenerated.us has decided to grab the baton and keep Reformed Tunes Tuesday alive. I stopped the series because I’m not extremely familiar with the music scene. My fount had runneth dry.
Josh is a music freak, and will inevitably serve up a better spread than I could have ever done. I’m excited to see what he does, and even more excited to hear some God glorifying rock and roll. He’s posting the series on regenerated.us, and I’ll be syndicating it here on KRN. You can follow Josh on twitter, as well, by clicking here. And now, Here’s Josh.
I am an exile, a sojourner
A citizen of some other place
All I’ve seen is just a glimmer in a shadowy mirror
But I know one day we’ll see face to face
I am a nomad, a wanderer
I have nowhere to lay my head down
There’s no point in putting roots to deep when I’m moving on
Not settling for this unsettling town
My heart is filled with songs of forever
A city that endures, where all is made new
I know I don’t belong here
I’ll never call this place my home
I’m just passing through
I am a pilgrim, a voyager
I won’t rest until my lips touch the shore
Of the land that I’ve been longing for as long as I’ve lived
Where there’ll be no pain or tears anymore
My heart is filled with songs of forever
A city that endures, where all is made new
I know I don’t belong here
I’ll never call this place my home
I’m just passing through

Your friend is correct about Thrice being a secular band. The band does not call themselves Christian in any way at all, because three of the members aren’t even Christian. However, the lead singer and songwriter, Dustin Kensrue, is a Christian.
Songwriters generally write what’s on their heart, or on their mind. And because Dustin is a Christian, he naturally writes about the things of God. He is not very blatant about his lyrics being Christian, namely because he is very poetic in his lyrics. But if you can break down what he’s saying, it’s pretty awesome.
Take for instance the song “Like Moths To Flame”. Dustin writes from the point of view of Peter.(Lyrics – http://bit.ly/4CrLr5 Video – http://bit.ly/6nkEUo)

That’s cool. My friend really enjoys their music and how their lyrics are better then most ‘christian’ bands. Do like their sound so might have to check them out.
